RESEARCH METHODOLOGY COURSE ONLINE

INTRODUCTION:

More than 5 billion people globally have no access to timely, quality and affordable surgical care. The majority are in the low- and middle-income countries where the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) is operating. There is however limited research done in the region and hence less is known about context-specific research questions and interventions. Informed by our needs assessments, knowledge of Research Methodology was identified by COSECSA fellows and trainees as one of the limiting factors. We are therefore designing this interactive and practical based online training to impart research skills among participants interested in surgical care research.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate global surgery topics for an in-depth exploration and evidence production. This will be achieved by identifying why global surgery research is needed and what are the pressing questions in our region.
  • Properly conduct a research project using an appropriate and feasible design for an identified question. This will be achieved by identifying and applying various principles, methods and designs that are feasible to surgical research, examples of the key problems in everyday practices, and ultimately how it can improve surgical care and policy.
  • Develop research grant proposals that can attract funding support. This will be achieved by making a compelling case and justification for exploring on an identified question or translating a surgical intervention into practice and policy.
  • Disseminate research findings to ensure they are improving surgical care, practice and policy in the region. This will be achieved by identifying various methods and strategies of dissemination, scope of dissemination and identifying key journals, meetings and/or conferences in line with their research.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

We invite anyone interested in global surgery research; surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists and obstetricians. We anticipate a total of 50 participants per intake. Participants will be allocated mentors who will guide them in the development of a concept note on a topic of interest, which will be a product of this program and a consideration for the CPD. Hence, participants are encouraged to have a prior question or topic of research that they want to develop further as they undertake this online training. At the end of the training, trainees will submit a full report in a form of a fully developed concept note, proposal, or a well-written manuscript (if a trainee had already worked on some data collection). The resulting final submission should be done utilizing lessons learnt over the duration of the training.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY:

This will be an online program comprising both self-reading through our online COSECSA online Research Methodology Course and Live Webinars Sessions. For every online session, there will be a maximum of 2 talks as planned by the faculty members. Participants will be required to interact on the online platform responding to a posted activity/assignment and commenting on at least one fellow trainee’s work. Live sessions will give an opportunity for participants to interact with course faculty. Additionally, trainees will have access to reference articles from the COSECSA journal (ECAJS) and other journals that have collaborations with COSECSA, these are the BJS, RCSI.

DURATION AND TIMELINE

This online training will be conducted for 10 weeks, starting from 20th September 2024 to 22nd  November, 2024. There will be one live online session every week, taking a maximum of 2 hours.

EVALUATION AND CERTIFICATION:

COSECSA is a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) provider. Participants who complete the whole program will be given a Certificate with CPD points.

FACULTY MEMBERS:

The training will be delivered by an identified pool of experts from COSECSA and partners. Our faculty members are expert in the field of research, and will facilitate the live sessions as well as weekly online interaction, responding to comments and raised questions.
